2008-05-19 - Sarah: Is Something Funny?
(Genesis 17:15-21, 18:9-15, 21:1-7 and Hebrews 11:11)
Sarah said, "God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me." (Genesis 21:6 NIV)
Sarah had the same reaction her husband Abraham did, when she heard they would have a child in old age; she laughed. The idea seemed absurd, and even though Sarah didn't own up to the fact that she expressed amusement, God stuck to His word - and Sarah, in her 90s, delivered a son. She named him Isaac, which meant laughter, to remind herself never to question God again.
Sarah didn't understand why she had to wait for things to manifest. When doubting and complaining enter our minds, we need to not let them seize our feelings. Instead, we should take hold of faith and put it into practice. We shouldn't be impatient waiting, for the victory will eventually come our way.
Let Sarah act as an encouragement today. She too waited and waited - and not always patiently - for her dreams to become reality. God overlooked her flawed tendencies, and did not forget her or her dream.
Lord, The world rotates at high speed all around me, and there is no switch to turn it off. I keep waiting for the visions and hopes You put in me to come to pass, and I admit I get discouraged. Show me how to make the waiting period bearable, and to not let disbelief overtake my faith. May I have no doubts when it comes to the promises You have spoken into my life. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
