2008-03-03 - What Do I Need with the
Armor of God?
Part 3 - The Breastplate of Righteousness
The second portion of the armor Paul mentions is the breastplate of
righteousness. (Ephesians 6:14) In Biblical times, the breastplate was made
of leather, and covered with metal to protect the chest area. Regardless
of what we are facing, the breastplate of righteousness can give us confidence.
I can recall a time when I needed some protection, and fast. It seemed my
home and health were attacking my checkbook and me. A microwave exploded,
a clothes dryer and then blender needed maintenance assistance, and I had
an abscessed tooth - all within weeks of each other. I wondered what had
I done to deserve this. I put on the full armor of God, didn't I? I may have
said it between putting globs of toothpaste on my brush, but did I really
mean it? Did I understand what I was asking?
I relied on primitive living skills while the microwave, blender, and clothes
dryer were incapacitated, and went through the joys of a root canal. It was
frustrating, and on a given day, I wondered what else would go wrong. Once
I started to turn my attention to the things in life that weren't broken,
the temporary inconveniences didn't seem so overwhelming. I readjusted my
breastplate, knowing that God would help me survive the situations that came
my way.
Lord, today is another opportunity to wear the breastplate
of righteousness, and I choose to wear it. Thank You for guarding and protecting
me. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
