2001-08-05 - Passages About God's Pursuit of Us
Someone has called God the "Hound of Heaven." He pursues us because of His
deep love for us. All verses are from the New American Standard Bible (NASB).
Romans 5:7-9 For one will hardly die for a righteous man;
though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. But God
demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ
died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall
be saved from the wrath of God through Him.
Hosea 2:5-7 For their mother has played the harlot; She
who conceived them has acted shamefully. For she said, "I will go after my
lovers, Who give me my bread and my water, My wool and my flax, my oil and
my drink." Therefore, behold, I will hedge up her way with thorns, And I
will build a wall against her so that she cannot find her paths. She will
pursue her lovers, but she will not overtake them; And she will seek them,
but will not find them. Then she will say, "I will go back to my first husband,
For it was better for me then than now!..." 14-17 Therefore, behold,
I will allure her, Bring her into the wilderness And speak kindly to her.
Then I will give her her vineyards from there, And the valley of Achor as
a door of hope. And she will sing there as in the days of her youth, As in
the day when she came up from the land of Egypt. "It will come about in that
day,'' declares the LORD, "That you will call Me Ishi And will no longer
call Me Baali. For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, So
that they will be mentioned by their names no more."
Luke 15:3-7 So He told them this parable, saying, "What
man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not
leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture and go after the one which is lost
until he finds it? When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors,
saying to them, "Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!"I
tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one
sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no
repentance.
Jonah 1:1-3 The word of the LORD came to Jonah the son
of Amittai saying,"Arise, go to Nineveh the great city and cry against it,
for their wickedness has come up before Me.'' But Jonah rose up to flee to
Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. So he went down to Joppa, found a
ship which was going to Tarshish, paid the fare and went down into it to
go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD … 1:17-2:2 And the
LORD appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the stomach
of the fish three days and three nights. Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his
God from the stomach of the fish, and he said, "I called out of my distress
to the LORD, And He answered me."
