2000-04-02 - Jesus as Teacher
Passages about Jesus, Part 7
Many of us have been blessed to learn from some excellent teachers. But the
best teacher, with unparallelled wisdom and authority, is our Lord.
He teaches the most important lessons of all, relating to His Kingdom:
Matt. 4:23 (NIV) Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching
in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing
every disease and sickness among the people.
His teaching has authority:
Matt. 7:28 (NIV) When Jesus had finished saying these
things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 because he
taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.
His teaching is from God:
John 7:16 (NIV) Jesus answered, "My teaching is not my
own. It comes from him who sent me. 17 If anyone chooses to do
God's will, he will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether
I speak on my own. 18 He who speaks on his own does so to gain
honor for himself, but he who works for the honor of the one who sent him
is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him."
His teaching requires obedience:
John 8:31 (NIV) To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus
said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
John 14:23 (NIV) Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me,
he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him
and make our home with him. 24 He who does not love me will not
obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the
Father who sent me. 25 All this I have spoken while still with
you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will
send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything
I have said to you."
He skillfully used such devices as parables to make His teaching pointed:
Matt. 13:2 (NIV) Such large crowds gathered around him
that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the
shore. 3 Then he told them many things in parables, saying: "A
farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed,
some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5
Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up
quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came
up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.
7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants.
8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop-a
hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9 He who has ears,
let him hear." 10 The disciples came to him and asked, "Why do
you speak to the people in parables?" 11 He replied, "The knowledge
of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to
them. 12 Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an
abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.
13 This is why I speak to them in parables: Though seeing, they
do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand."
