1997-07-20 - The Sabbath
Even though we no longer have to follow the rules of the Sabbath that were
taught in the Torah, the Sabbath should be a special day for us, and the
New Testament gives us examples of what we should do then -- although we
certainly are to do these on other days, too! -- helping others, as well
as teaching and learning from God's Word.
Exo 20:8-11 (NIV) "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six
days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath
to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your
son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor
the alien within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens
and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh
day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
Mat 12:10-12 (NIV) and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking
for a reason to accuse Jesus, they asked him, "Is it lawful to heal on the
Sabbath?" 11 He said to them, "If any of you has a sheep and it falls into
a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 How
much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good
on the Sabbath."
Mark 2:22-28 (NIV) And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he
does, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins
will be ruined. No, he pours new wine into new wineskins." 23 One Sabbath
Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along,
they began to pick some heads of grain. 24 The Pharisees said to him, "Look,
why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?" 25 He answered, "Have
you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and
in need? 26 In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house
of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to
eat. And he also gave some to his companions." 27 Then he said to them, "The
Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is
Lord even of the Sabbath."
Luke 4:16 (NIV) He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and
on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he
stood up to read.
Acts 17:2 (NIV) As his custom was, Paul went into the synagogue, and on
three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,
Heb 4:9-10 (NIV) There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of
God; 10 for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just
as God did from his.
