PC-USA 1997-06-13 - Peace

Hi everyone. As often happens when I run into something in the Bible several times in a short period of time, I feel I should write a devotional about it. This week, I have run into Jesus' words "Peace be with you" over and over. Christ had a lot to say about peace. He said "Peace be with you" to the eleven remaining disciples when they were frightened at his post-resurrection appearance; they thought He was a ghost. He said it right before He breathed the Holy Spirit on them, after telling them He was sending them as his ambassadors. He told people to go in peace after healing them (Luke 8:48) He instructed his disciples about blessing a house with their peace (Luke 10:5-6). He encouraged their troubled hearts by urging them to be at peace.

John 14:27 (NIV) Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

I have been pondering--do we really appropriate that peace He offers us? How might it change our lives if we did! Because of our lack of peace, we suffer from anxiety, high blood pressure, sleepless nights, inability to accomplish all we should, and more.

Are you like me? Are you a worrier? I am about certain things -- Oh I do fine with little things like broken dishwashers, but when it comes to things close to my heart, I worry a lot. But ya know what? Sometimes I think we believe that worrying is just part of "doing our part." But actually, worry is sin.

Rom 14:23 (NRSV) But those who have doubts are condemned if they eat, because they do not act from faith; for whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.

If we truly lived in His peace, I believe it could revolutionize our lives. We would have less heartache, fewer sleepless nights, lower blood pressure, and most likely be more productive, also!

Please join me in praying that God will help us truly grasp and utilize the peace God wants us to live in.

Dear Father, please help us to really understand this tremendous gift of peace You have for us, and help us to rest in the peace that You want us to. In Jesus' name, amen.
