Devotional - 99-12-12 - Passages about
Waiting
The Advent Passages Series, Part 3
Advent is a time of waiting. The original Advent was a time of waiting for
the birth of the Messiah. Today many of us are waiting -- waiting for the
results of medical tests, waiting for the arrival of relatives for the holidays,
waiting for exam grades, waiting for a dream to come true. Today we will
look at some passages about waiting.
Psa 130:5 (NRSV) I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and
in his word I hope.
Isa 40:31 (NRSV) but those who wait for the LORD shall
renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall
run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.
How We Should Wait
Prayerfully
Micah 7:7 (NRSV) But as for me, I will look to the LORD,
I will wait for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me.
Patiently
Rom 8:22-25 (NRSV) We know that the whole creation
has been groaning in labor pains until now; and not only the creation, but
we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while
we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved.
Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if
we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
Obediently
Titus 2:11-13 (NRSV) For the grace of God has appeared,
bringing salvation to all, training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions,
and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and
godly, while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory
of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Actively Serving
1 Th 1:9-10 (NRSV) For the people of those regions report
about us what kind of welcome we had among you, and how you turned to God
from idols, to serve a living and true God, and to wait for his Son from
heaven, whom he raised from the dead--Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath
that is coming.
Hosea 12:6 (NRSV) But as for you, return to your God,
hold fast to love and justice, and wait continually for your God.
Psa 39:7 (NRSV) And now, O Lord, what do I wait for? My
hope is in you.
Courageously
Psa 27:14 (NRSV) Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let
your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!
