Devotional - 99-11-21 - Passages About Citizenship
The Bible doesn't tell us whom to vote for, but there are some poignant
words about what types of citizens we should be. Though our ultimate home
is "out of this world," we are to take our earthly citizenship very seriously;
this reflects on our witness as representatives of Christ.
One of Our Roles: Intercession
1 Tim 2:1-2 (NRSV) First of all, then, I urge that
supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone,
for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet
and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity.
One of Our Duties: Obedience to Laws
Rom 13:1-7 (NRSV) Let every person be subject
to the governing authorities; for there is no authority except from God,
and those authorities that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever
resists authority resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will
incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad.
Do you wish to have no fear of the authority? Then do what is good, and you
will receive its approval; for it is God's servant for your good. But if
you do what is wrong, you should be afraid, for the authority does not bear
the sword in vain! It is the servant of God to execute wrath on the wrongdoer.
Therefore one must be subject, not only because of wrath but also because
of conscience. For the same reason you also pay taxes, for the authorities
are God's servants, busy with this very thing. Pay to all what is due them--taxes
to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect
is due, honor to whom honor is due.
Mat 22:17-21 (NRSV) Tell us, then, what you think. Is
it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not? But Jesus, aware of their
malice, said, "Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me
the coin used for the tax." And they brought him a denarius. Then he said
to them, "Whose head is this, and whose title? They answered, "The emperor's."
Then he said to them, "Give therefore to the emperor the things that are
the emperor's, and to God the things that are God's."
If We Feel We are Mistreated
We can peacefully appeal for fair treatment.
Acts 16:37 (NRSV) But Paul replied, "They have beaten
us in public, uncondemned, men who are Roman citizens, and have thrown us
into prison; and now are they going to discharge us in secret? Certainly
not! Let them come and take us out themselves." The police reported these
words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they
were Roman citizens; so they came and apologized to them. And they took them
out and asked them to leave the city.
How to Deal with Legal Problems Between Believers
1 Cor 6:1-2 (NRSV) When any of you has a grievance against
another, do you dare to take it to court before the unrighteous, instead
of taking it before the saints? Do you not know that the saints will judge
the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to
try trivial cases?
Ultimate Perspective About Our Citizenship
Heb 11:13-16 (NRSV) All of these died in faith without
having received the promises, but from a distance they saw and greeted them.
They confessed that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth, for
people who speak in this way make it clear that they are seeking a homeland.
If they had been thinking of the land that they had left behind, they would
have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country,
that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their
God; indeed, he has prepared a city for them.
