Devotional - 99-10-30 - Faith
From time to time I like to review what I believe by looking at Scripture.
Most churches and parachurch groups have statements of faith. We as believers
also have our own statement of faith which we gather from hearing the Word
of God. When I had a personal webpage, I thought it wise to include what
I believed. I think it helps people who read what I write understand what
I have tucked away in my head and heart, though I do not always elaborate
on it. I had hoped to condense this into one devotional, unfortunately it
will have to be broken into two. Here is part 1.
You may find people to be very inquisitive about the Christian faith- yet
if you are like me we can not always recall where these things are in our
Bibles -I hope this helps.
I beleive that the Bible is the Word and Revelation of God. Inerrant, infallible,
and God breathed.
Psalm 19:7-11 The law of Jehovah is perfect, restoring
the soul: The testimony of Jehovah is sure, making wise the simple. The precepts
of Jehovah are right, rejoicing the heart: The commandment of Jehovah is
pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of Jehovah is clean, enduring for ever:
The ordinances of Jehovah are true, and righteous altogether. More to be
desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey
and the droppings of the honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned:
In keeping them there is great reward.
Luke 24:13-28 And behold, two of them were going that
very day to a village named Emmaus, which was threescore furlongs from Jerusalem.
And they communed with each other of all these things which had happened.
And it came to pass, while they communed and questioned together, that Jesus
himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were holden that they
should not know him. And he said unto them, What communications are these
that ye have one with another, as ye walk? And they stood still, looking
sad. And one of them, named Cleopas, answering said unto him, Dost thou alone
sojourn in Jerusalem and not know the things which are come to pass there
in these days? And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him,
The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed
and word before God and all the people: and how the chief priests and our
rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. But
we hoped that it was he who should redeem Israel. Yea and besides all this,
it is now the third day since these things came to pass. Moreover certain
women of our company amazed us, having been early at the tomb; and when they
found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of
angels, who said that he was alive. And certain of them that were with us
went to the tomb, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they
saw not. And he said unto them, O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe
in all that the prophets have spoken! Behooved it not the Christ to suffer
these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning from Moses and from
all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things
concerning himself. And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they were
going: and he made as though he would go further.
John 16:12-15 I have yet many things to say unto you,
but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come,
he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself;
but what things soever he shall hear, these shall he speak: and he shall
declare unto you the things that are to come. He shall glorify me: for he
shall take of mine, and shall declare it unto you. All things whatsoever
the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he taketh of mine, and shall
declare it unto you.
II Timothy 3:16 -17 Every scripture inspired of God is
also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction
which is in righteousness. That the man of God may be complete, furnished
completely unto every good work.
II Peter 1:16-21 For we did not follow cunningly devised
fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus
Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God
the Father honor and glory, when there was borne such a voice to him by the
Majestic Glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased: and this
voice we ourselves heard borne out of heaven, when we were with him in the
holy mount. And we have the word of prophecy made more sure; whereunto ye
do well that ye take heed, as unto a lamp shining in a dark place, until
the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts: knowing this first,
that no prophecy of scripture is of private interpretation. For no prophecy
ever came by the will of man: but men spake from God, being moved by the
Holy Spirit.
I believe in the Triune nature of God - Father Son and Holy Spirit and in
the truth that the Holy Spirit is the infallible interpreter of the infallible
Bible.
John 16:7-15 Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is
expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will
not come unto you; but if I go, I will send him unto you. And he, when he
is come, will convict the world in respect of sin, and of righteousness,
and of judgment: of sin, because they believe not on me; of righteousness,
because I go to the Father, and ye behold me no more; of judgment, because
the prince of this world hath been judged. I have yet many things to say
unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth,
is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from
himself; but what things soever he shall hear, these shall he speak: and
he shall declare unto you the things that are to come. He shall glorify me:
for he shall take of mine, and shall declare it unto you. All things whatsoever
the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he taketh of mine, and shall
declare it unto you.
1 John 5: 1-8 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ
is begotten of God: and whosoever loveth him that begat loveth him also that
is begotten of him. Hereby we know that we love the children of God, when
we love God and do his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we
keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. For whatsoever
is begotten of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that hath
overcome the world, even our faith. And who is he that overcometh the world,
but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? This is he that came
by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not with the water only, but with
the water and with the blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness,
because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three who bear witness, the
Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and the three agree in one.
I believe in the Deity of Jesus Christ and His Virgin Birth and in the truth
that He was God incarnate for Whom and by Whom all things were created.
Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you
a sign: behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his
name Immanuel. Matthew 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise:
When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together
she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. John 1:14 And the Word became
flesh, and dwelt among us (and we beheld his glory, glory as of the only
begotten from the Father), full of grace and truth.
John 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time
with you, and dost thou not know me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen
the Father; how sayest thou, Show us the Father?
I believe in the personality of the Holy Spirit His work of regeneration
and His indwelling in the heart of the believer.
Romans 8:14-27 For as many as are led by the Spirit of
God, these are sons of God. For ye received not the spirit of bondage again
unto fear; but ye received the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba,
Father. The Spirit himself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are children
of God: and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ;
if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified with him.
For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be
compared with the glory which shall be revealed to us-ward. For the earnest
expectation of the creation waiteth for the revealing of the sons of God.
For the creation was subjected to vanity, not of its own will, but by reason
of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also shall be delivered
from the bondage of corruption into the liberty of the glory of the children
of God. For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain
together until now. And not only so, but ourselves also, who have the
first-fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting
for our adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. For in hope were we
saved: but hope that is seen is not hope: for who hopeth for that which he
seeth? But if we hope for that which we see not, then do we with patience
wait for it. And in like manner the Spirit also helpeth our infirmity: for
we know not how to pray as we ought; but the Spirit himself maketh intercession
for us with groanings which cannot be uttered; and he that searcheth the
hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession
for the saints according to the will of God.
I beleive in the personality of Satan " the old serpent...the devil and Satan
the deciever of the whole world"
Isaiah 14:12-17 How art thou fallen from heaven, O day-star,
son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, that didst lay low
the nations! And thou saidst in thy heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will
exalt my throne above the stars of God; and I will sit upon the mount of
congregation, in the uttermost parts of the north; I will ascend above the
heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High. Yet thou shalt
be brought down to Sheol, to the uttermost parts of the pit. They that see
thee shall gaze at thee, they shall consider thee, saying, Is this the man
that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; that made the world
as a wilderness, and overthrew the cities thereof; that let not loose his
prisoners to their home?
Matthew 4:2-11 And when he had fasted forty days and
forty nights, he afterward hungered. And the tempter came and said unto him,
If thou art the Son of God, command that these stones become bread. But he
answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but
by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Then the devil taketh
him into the holy city; and he set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and
saith unto him, If thou art the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is
written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and, On their hands
they shall bear thee up, lest haply thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus
said unto him, Again it is written, Thou shalt not make trial of the Lord
thy God. Again, the devil taketh him unto an exceeding high mountain, and
showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; and he
said unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down
and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it
is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou
serve. Then the devil leaveth him; and behold, angels came and ministered
unto him.
John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts
of your father it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning,
and standeth not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he
speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father
thereof.
Revelation 12:9-10 And the great dragon was cast down,
the old serpent, he that is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the
whole world; he was cast down to the earth, and his angels were cast down
with him. And I heard a great voice in heaven, saying, Now is come the salvation,
and the power, and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ:
for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, who accuseth them before our
God day and night.
I beleive in the universality and the exceeding sinfulness of sin.
Ezekiel 18:4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul
of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth,
it shall die.
Romans 3:10-26 as it is written, There is none righteous,
no, not one; There is none that understandeth, There is none that seeketh
after God; They have all turned aside, they are together become unprofitable;
There is none that doeth good, no, not, so much as one: Their throat is an
open sepulchre; With their tongues they have used deceit: The poison of asps
is under their lips: Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: Their
feet are swift to shed blood; Destruction and misery are in their ways; And
the way of peace have they not known: There is no fear of God before their
eyes. Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it speaketh to them
that are under the law; that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world
may be brought under the judgment of God: because by the works of the law
shall no flesh be justified in his sight; for through the law cometh the
knowledge of sin. But now apart from the law a righteousness of God hath
been manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets, being witnessed
by the law and the prophets; even the righteousness of God through faith
in Jesus Christ unto all them that believe; for there is no distinction;
for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God; being justified
freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: whom
God set forth to be a propitiation, through faith, in his blood, to show
his righteousness because of the passing over of the sins done aforetime,
in the forbearance of God; for the showing, I say, of his righteousness at
this present season: that he might himself be just, and the justifier of
him that hath faith in Jesus.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the free
gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
