Devotional - 99-10-19 - Port's Faithful
Shepherd, Chapter 7
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if any man is in Christ
he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have
come.
"Get and keep a constant savory relish of your Christian privileges, where
you are invested as new creatures in Christ: more especially of these six.
-
Of your dignity, that you are God's Sons, 1 John 3:1,2, Christ's brethren,
Hebrews 2:11, Heavens heirs, John 20:17, partakers of a high and heavenly
calling, James 2:5.
-
Of your liberty, that you are the Lord's free men, Philippians 3:14, delivered
out of the hands of all enemies, 1 Corinthians 7:22, 2 Kings 17:29.
-
Of your victory, that you are, through Christ, more than conquerors over
all the world of creatures, Romans 8:37, 38, 1 John 5:4, of evils, temptations,
perfections.
-
Of your safety, that you have an almighty God for your place of refuge,
Psalm 18:2,
a hedge of providence, Job 1:10, a guard of angels, Psalm 91:11, an
inclosure of mercy, Psalm 32:10, and God's Scripture promises, as a pledge
of protection for defence, Hebrews 13:5,6.
-
Of your riches as durable substance in heaven, Hebrews 10:34: an incorruptible
inheritance, 1 Peter 1:4, a kingdom of glory, Luke 12:32, and a crown of
life, Revelation 2:10. You are heirs of God and co-heirs of Christ.
-
Of your joy and pleasure, precious for kind and plentiful for measure,
Psalm 16:11,
peace inconceivable, Philippians 4:7, joy unspeakable,
1 Peter 1:8,
the Masters joy: O! Get your hearts affected with all these as being yours:
chew and suck them by serious meditation; work and warm them upon your hearts
by close application, rubbing them into your affections.
Oppose these your spiritual privileges to your temporal pressures, setting
one against the other, as your heavenly friends to your earthly foes; your
high dignity in Christ, to your meanness in outward condition; your
future joy and rest, to your present troubles and sorrows: This
will not only make you patient under your afflictions in this life,
Romans 12:11
but joyful in them, Romans 5:3, and triumphant over them,
1 Corinthians 15:55
Thus did Paul, Romans 8:18, 2 Corinthians 4:17, 6:8-10. These will
provoke to duty, 1 Peter 2:9,11,12, and preserve from fainting,
2 Corinthians 4:16,17,
and from trouble of heart, John 14:1,2." --Robert Port
