Devotional - 99-05-23 - Verses about Pride
The world encourages us to be proud -- proud of our accomplishments (which
we could not do without the gifts God gave us), proud of our wealth (which
we would not have if God did not allow it), proud of our looks (which will
fade). Today we will look at some of what the word of God has to say about
pride.
Mark 7:21-23 (NKJV) For from within, out of the heart
of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts,
covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride,
foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a man.
1 John 2:16 (NKJV) For all that is in the world; the lust
of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life; is not of the
Father but is of the world.
Results of pride:
Prov 11:2 (NKJV) When pride comes, then comes shame; But
with the humble is wisdom.
Prov 13:10 (NKJV) By pride comes nothing but strife, But
with the well-advised is wisdom.
Prov 16:18 (NKJV) Pride goes before destruction, And a
haughty spirit before a fall.
God's Attitudes and Actions Toward Pride:
Prov 6:16-18 (NKJV) These six things the LORD hates, Yes,
seven are an abomination to Him: A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that
shed innocent blood, A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift
in running to evil.
Psa 31:23 (NKJV) Oh, love the LORD, all you His saints!
For the LORD preserves the faithful, And fully repays the proud person.
Psa 138:6 (NKJV) Though the LORD is on high, Yet He regards
the lowly; But the proud He knows from afar.
God-pleasing Attitudes toward Pride:
Psa 40:4 (NKJV) Blessed is that man who makes the LORD
his trust, And does not respect the proud, nor such as turn aside to
lies.
Titus 3:1-2 (NKJV) Remind them to be subject to rulers
and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil
of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men.
