Devotional - 99-04-20 - I & (J): Jesus Christ
The Holy Alphabet Series
Matthew 23:8, "...for One is your Teacher, and you are
all brethren."
"Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, who in time became Man for His Elect,
Gal: 4:4." --Robert Port
The Church has held that the person of Christ has always existed as co-equal
Son of the Father. He has, from eternity, existed with the Father and the
Holy Spirit.
The effort of multiplying passages about Jesus and His Person, Work, and
Life is fairly easy. For example, two passages speak of Christ as the Creator:
John 1:3, Colossians 1:15-18. These passages declare that He was with the
Father before the creation of the world, John 1:1, 15, 30; 6:62, 8:58; 17:5;
2 Corinthians 8:9. The following passages say that Christ, "came into the
world," or "came down from heaven." John 3:13, 31; 13:3; 16:28; 1 Corinthians
15:47. Thus we have the doctrine of the pre-existence of Christ, before the
foundation of the world.
But what we seek today is a devotional and encouragement to us that we might
live more for Christ and less for ourselves. What we seek each day is put
to death the deeds of sin that so easily captivate us and to live more and
more a Christlike life, a life more like Jesus', a life more in tune with
the will of God.
It is this name of Jesus Christ which is before us. It is the name of Jesus
Christ from which we get our name, Christians. We do not call ourselves Paulites,
or Bibleens. We are Christians. We are all brethren, who call ourselves after
the name of Christ. Jesus is our example, our Lord, our Leader, Saviour,
and friend.
In fact, think, for just a moment of some of the names that are attributed
to Christ: The second Adam (1 Cor. 15:45-47), Advocate (1 John 2:1), King
(John 12:13), Immanuel (Matt. 1:23), Author of salvation (Heb. 2:10), Teacher
(Mark 12:14), Lamb of God (John 1:36), Physician (Luke 4:23), Shepherd and
guardian of souls (1 Peter 2:25), Righteous one (Isaiah 53:11), Alpha and
Omega (Rev. 21:6), Head of all (Col. 2:10), Indescribable gift (2 Cor. 9:15),
Husband (2 Cor. 11:2), Rose of Sharon and lily of the valleys (Song 2:1),
Morning star (2 Peter 1:19), Prince of peace (Isaiah 9:6), Truth and way
and life (John 14:6). Such are just a small sample of the names attributed
to Jesus Christ in Scripture.
Being a follow of Christ means we have a great Leader, a Saviour, and an
Example to aid us in our occupation of being a Christian. May we rest in
His sufficient grace to help us in our daily efforts to serve and follow
Him more and more faithfully.
"Christ is full of Grace....Go to him and then you will surely find
comfort." Jonathan Edwards
