This week we look at verses treating guilt. According to Vine's Expository
Dictionary of New Testament Words, one translation of "guilty" is
"enochos," which means "held in, bound by." Jesus' death on the cross for
our sins, and His resurrection, freed us 2000 years ago from our sins which
bind us. If we accept Him as Savior, it's a "done deal."
Guilt Before Christ's Death and
Resurrection
Deu 21:8 (NNAS) "'Forgive Your people Israel whom You
have redeemed, O LORD, and do not place the guilt of innocent blood in the
midst of Your people Israel.' And the bloodguiltiness shall be forgiven them."
Lev 16:20-22 (NLT) ""When Aaron has finished making atonement
for the Most Holy Place, the Tabernacle, and the altar, he must bring the
living goat forward. He is to lay both of his hands on the goat's head and
confess over it all the sins and rebellion of the Israelites. In this way,
he will lay the people's sins on the head of the goat; then he will send
it out into the wilderness, led by a man chosen for this task. After the
man sets it free in the wilderness, the goat will carry all the people's
sins upon itself into a desolate land."
Isa 6:5-7 (NNAS) "Then I said, "Woe is me, for I am ruined!
Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I live among a people of unclean
lips; For my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. Then one of the
seraphim flew to me with a burning coal in his hand, which he had taken from
the altar with tongs. He touched my mouth with it and said, "Behold, this
has touched your lips; and your iniquity is taken away and your sin is forgiven."
Psa 32:5 (NNAS) "I acknowledged my sin to You, And my
iniquity I did not hide; I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the
LORD"; And You forgave the guilt of my sin."
Psa 130:3-4 (NLT) "LORD, if you kept a record of our sins,
who, O Lord, could ever survive? But you offer forgiveness, that we might
learn to fear you."
2 Chr 7:12-14 (NNAS) "Then the LORD appeared to Solomon
at night and said to him, "I have heard your prayer and have chosen this
place for Myself as a house of sacrifice. If I shut up the heavens so that
there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I
send pestilence among My people, Then if my people who are called by my name
will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked
ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and heal their
land."
Guilt After Christ's Death and
Resurrection
1 John 1:1-2 (NNAS) "What was from the beginning, what
we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and
touched with our hands, concerning the Word of Life--and the life was manifested,
and we have seen and testify and proclaim to you the eternal life, which
was with the Father and was manifested to us--"
1 John 1:9 (NNAS) "If we confess our sins, He is faithful
and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all
unrighteousness."
