A Brief Survey of God's Character
Exodus 34:6-7 And Jehovah passed by before him, and
proclaimed, Jehovah, Jehovah, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger,
and abundant in lovingkindness and truth, keeping lovingkindness for thousands,
forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin; and that will by no means clear
the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon
the children's children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation.
This passage reveals to us, God's own statement regarding His character.
It shows His great love (and almost infinite patience) for His creatures.
He is very eager to forgive iniquity transgression and sin because He knows
our frame he remembers we are dust {Psalm 103:14}. According to Psalm 51:1-17
please take notice that sin is a moral and spiritual leprosy that ultimately
is against God. God must be righteous when He forgives sin. His sense of
justice demands exaction of penalty for every transgression and disobedience.
He provided the means to accomplish this in the atonement. We all have access
to this - but - we must accept what God has so graciously done for us. God
visits the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and upon the children's
children unto the third and fourth generation. There are no exceptions! Please
Read II Samuel chapter 12. Although King David in this passage was forgiven
for his disgraceful sins, the Lord visited his iniquities upon him and his
descendants. Please Notice This Verse
Galatians 6:7-8 But let him that is taught in the word
communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things. Be not deceived; God
is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For
he that soweth unto his own flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but
he that soweth unto the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap eternal life.
No one can conceal any act or even thought from the Lord God Almighty Read/study
Psalm 139. God knows all about men and will deal with them on the basis of
love and mercy or on that of strict righteousness and justice. Any man who
accepts God's gracious provision of atonement and forgiveness may be brought
into closest fellowship with His maker during life on earth. and when this
life on earth is over he may enter into life eternally with his Lord. God
deals with His own as sons while we are on earth, and punishes us for his
sins and transgressions. Those who stubbornly refuse to yield their wills
to God and accept His provision of atonement are on their own. They will
be dealt with on a strict basis of justice and righteousness.
A view of God sitting Sovereign on the throne of the Universe
II Chronicles 20:5-13 And Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly
of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of Jehovah, before the new court; and
he said, O Jehovah, the God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and
art not thou ruler over all the kingdoms of the nations? and in thy hand
is power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee. Didst not thou,
O our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel,
and give it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever? And they dwelt therein,
and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name, saying, If evil come
upon us, the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we will stand before
this house, and before thee, (for thy name is in this house,) and cry unto
thee in our affliction, and thou wilt hear and save. And now, behold, the
children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel
invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned aside from
them, and destroyed them not; behold, how they reward us, to come to cast
us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit. O our God,
wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company
that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but out eyes are upon
thee. And all Judah stood before Jehovah, with their little ones, their wives,
and their children.
Psalm 33:10-11 Jehovah bringeth the counsel of the nations
to nought; He maketh the thoughts of the peoples to be of no effect. The
counsel of Jehovah standeth fast for ever, The thoughts of his heart to all
generations.
God in His infinite wisdom and might foreknew and foretold in advance, the
history success and downfall of nations to all generations. Any decision
of any council of any nations that is contrary to His plans and purposes,
is brought to no avail. It would be well for any council to heed this warning
and conduct their business in the knowledge and the will of God so their
efforts will not be in vain.
To wrap up this first part of the series I would like to conclude this devotional
with a passage of scripture and a brief survey of Gods right to demand first
place in our lives.
Nahum 1:2-8 Jehovah is a jealous God and avengeth; Jehovah
avengeth and is full of wrath; Jehovah taketh vengeance on his adversaries,
and he reserveth wrath for his enemies. Jehovah is slow to anger, and great
in power, and will by no means clear the guilty: Jehovah hath his way in
the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers: Bashan
languisheth, and Carmel; and the flower of Lebanon languisheth. The mountains
quake at him, and the hills melt; and the earth is upheaved at his presence,
yea, the world, and all that dwell therein. Who can stand before his indignation?
and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his wrath is poured out
like fire, and the rocks are broken asunder by him. Jehovah is good, a stronghold
in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that take refuge in him. But with
an over-running flood he will make a full end of her place, and will pursue
his enemies into darkness.
God wants your full affections to be His first. We are His creatures. A man
who transfers his affections to another god (little g) arouses Gods wrath
and is set forth as His enemy. God who created the elements and the material
universe maintains full control over them and will continue His control as
long as they exist. We can rest assured that no stranger or unknown will
wrest control of the universe from God - but the future will proceed exactly
as God wishes and foretold through His prophets. (Please see Amos 3:7) Everyone
living in the universe ought to align themselves with God and take refuge
in His stronghold. The losers are all those that do not choose this course
but choose to set their wills against God (become His enemies) and are pursued
into darkness and make a full end of their place. I may add this is not God;s
fault. He would that all men might be saved, yet some do not heed even though
they are pursued. From the Scriptures we learn that sooner or later everyone
must have dealings with God. Wisdom would dictate that we accept the peace
and pardon now and live with the gracious provision for us. Yet the greatest
view of the Almighty is found in the books of Matthew, Mark , Luke and John.
According to the predictions of the Old Testament, Jesus of Nazareth is none
other than one of the persons of the Holy Trinity. God Himself came and dwelt
among us for a few short years and purchased man's redemption by His own
atoning blood. This is the God of Revelation.
In His Service,
