1 Corinthians 14:18a: I thank God.

May 12 is a day that might as well live in history. We are much more sophisticated now, but it was on this day in 1937 that the first world wide radio broadcast took place. Lest you think this was a USA thing, the reality is that this was an English broadcast of the coronation of King George VI. This means that only 61 years ago today the first world wide radio broadcast took place. How far have we come since then!, Wow.

Communication is a big deal. I know that many times in my life a miss-communication has resulted in heart-hurt, non-understanding or confusion. Everyone experiences the same, and it only emphasizes the fact of how important communication really is. Sometimes, on earth, there exists relationships in which we can do little, it seems, to establish or keep up communication. However, there is a communication that we can establish, without struggle, that can often lead to fixing these earthly communication problems.

I speak of prayer as you might imagine. Prayer is the ultimate communication between God and ourselves and this communication surpasses all others. I would like to mention 3 kinds of prayer; secret, family, and public.

  1. Secret prayer is the prayer you will find me most thumping upon. This is the prayer that no one knows about. This is the prayer I call 'the prayer of the closet'. This is your time alone with God, you and the Lord, me and the Lord, no one knows about it, we get no spiritual 'credit' for this time, it is between us and our Saviour, it is 'in the closet'. This is where I feel we really pour our hearts out before Christ.

  2. Family prayer is quite possibly the most precious prayer of all. To pray with those who are closest to us, what a challenge and blessing this is. A challenge because they know us all to well, a blessing because as we pour our hearts out, there is no escaping the obvious need we express for Christ and forgiveness. We show our vulnerability in prayer that would be inexpressible else through prayer.

  3. Public. This is a little more difficult for most folks. However, public prayer is also a growing experience. As we learn to pour our hearts out before others, we do the same before our Lord, we grow in grace. However, our pleads and cares expressed before the throne of grace can also be most personal, and sometimes this makes public prayer extra difficult for some. Prayer in the face of others is something we all can grow in. In order to grow we must begin.

God gives grace to us and communication with Him is platinum time spent. Prayer is essential to our walk with God. Communication is essential to every relationship we have here on earth, it is all the more essential to the relationship we have in heaven with our Lord and Saviour.

"I know of no better thermometer to your spiritual temperature than this, the measure of the intensity of your prayer." C. H. Spurgeon
