[PC-USA] 2020-09-01 - Thanksgiving in September

Some television channels advertise that they have special Christmas movies at different times during the year. Over the last several weeks, the Lord has put on my heart the thought that we ought to have Thanksgiving commemorations at other times during the year, too! Several people have recently inspired me with their own thankful spirits. We may not hear of them often, but all around us, there are people with grateful spirits, being thankful as we are all supposed to in ALL circumstances, as Paul taught the Corinthian church, and is recorded for us in 1 Corinthians 5:18.

Joni Earecksen Tada has been paralyzed from the neck down for over 50 years, since a diving accident. But instead of yelling at God or complaining, she speaks of being thankful for the 10,000th show that is part of her ministry which has helped disabled people all over the world.

I was also very moved by African-American Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, who last week expressed his thanks for the opportunity offered by America, and has said where else could he, a Black man, win an office in a majority White district - and where else could a family "go from cotton to Congress in one generation" to use his own words. He was also thankful that his grandfather lived to see that, and he noted that if we lived in a Socialist country, other families would not be able to fulfill their dreams, as his has been able to do. Of course, that is something for which all of us US citizens can be thankful! with him!

Closer to home, a friend of mine is in the midst of her fourth bout with cancer. Instead of despairing, she is thankful that she doesn't have to stay in a hospital overnight, and that she can sometimes attend church.

My thank-yous aren't as momentous as those mentioned above, but I would like to share them since most of us have "everyday" things for which to have a grateful spirit. would also like to hear from any of you, what you have been thankful for during this Summer!

I have already shared my standard but sincere list of family, friends, church, pretty good health, a roof over my head, etc. So I will stick to details of newer items.

The father of a dear friend of mine recently died, and in addition to her grief over losing him, she is also responsible for all of the necessary procedures that one must do after any death. Since I had gone through that experience two years ago, the Lord has used me to help her in what she has called an overwhelming time. I am so very thankful to be able to help!

I am thankful that there have been only 11 Category 4 Hurricanes during the last SEVENTY years; however, for those who were in the midst of "Laura," that does not help. So I am thankful that we can not only intercede to a loving God for them, but also some of us are able to contribute through our churches or other trustworthy groups, to help with recovery, and also thankful for the federal government help that is already in process.

Heavy humidity is always hard on the lungs of those of us who are allergic to mold spores, so I am thankful for my dehumidifiers and Air Conditioners, which my doctor has called my best friend LOL. Along with good meds, they keep me out of doctor's offices, and from developing pneumonia. 🙂 In the same vein, i am thankful that drier air always comes along in the Fall!

I have been a praying person, ever since I came to faith in Christ when I was 15 years old. But more and more, I have become very thankful that every single one of us have the privilege of prayer, no matter who or where we are, no matter the situation or time. God never has full voicemail, and His address is easy to remember; he is with us wherever we go. For decades, God called Richard and me to busy lives of work, school (I went back and completed my degree in 2002), and volunteer ministry. All of it was necessary and good, but now, He has called us to a quieter time, a time of even more frequent and fervent prayer for people - more "being" and less "going" and "doing." He also has provided the opportunity to do volunteer work for several groups - from home. I loved things the other way, but now, I am loving this, too.

So as you can see, I have much for which to be thankful. I look forward to hearing from you guys. We always appreciate your thoughts.
