2020-07-25 - Worship
John 4:24 (NIV) God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.
After a lengthy delay, the Major League Baseball season began this week. Some fans have lost interest for a couple reasons including the salary demands of the players, though some of their fans have decreased wages due to Covid, as well as due to the politicizing of baseball and other sports. But some fans are quite excited about the return, in spite of the changes in the games. Along with the many restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 virus, no fans will be allowed in the baseball stadiums. Crowd noise will be played over speakers to simulate fans in the ballparks (which seems silly to me since the players know it is not real). Games are only available to fans via television or the internet. In spite of these restrictions, and some fans and players have been eager for the season to begin. Enthusiasm is high among people who still enjoy baseball,
Sometimes enthusiasm for worship decreases due to a life event such as an illness or work issue, and sometimes because of something going on in a particular church. COVID-19 has placed restrictions on churches, which changes how we worship but not the fact that we do. In some locations, churches are limited in attendance. Masks are required or recommended. Some churches have elected to hold services online or on the conference calls. Even though people may not be gathering inside the church building, the body of Christ is still present wherever the members are located. We don‘t have to physically be in a certain building, to worship God. We can worship Him “in spirit and in truth" wherever we are. Jan and I have felt like we have been at church, after every Sunday and Wednesday online service.
We should not let our enthusiasm and energy wane during these unusual times. Christ still calls us to serve Him. We need to find new ways to worship and serve Him in the COVID-19 era.
