2020-06-06 - Following Instructions
1 Kings 2:2-3 (NIV) ”So be strong, show yourself a man, and observe what the LORD your God requires: Walk in his ways, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and requirements, as written in the Laws of Moses, so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go. ”
King David was about to die, and he was trying to give his successor, his son Solomon, some advice and counsel about how to govern Israel. David had plenty of experience with successes and failures in his life. David had killed Goliath, eluded Saul’s assaults, and united the kingdom. But he had also sent Uriah to his death in an attempt to cover up his affair with Bathsheba.
David expresses his advice to Solomon by telling him to obey God and to follow the Lord’s commandments. As a result of his obedience, Solomon would prosper both spiritually and financially. And as a result of Solomon following God's instructions, we can follow those instructions ourselves, through Solomon's God-inspired Book of Proverbs.
As many graduate from high school and college soon, King David’s advice still rings true today. The Bible spells out God’s rules and commands on how we are to live with each other. By following his instructions and walking in his ways, we can achieve many things here on earth.
