2020-05-30 - Jonah's Storm
Jonah 1:15-16 (NIV)—Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging seas grew calm. At this the men greatly feared the LORD, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to him.
Jonah is known as the man who tried to run away from God. Jonah bought passage on a ship and fled from God. The sailors on this vessel were pagans and believed in many gods, and Jonah knew that God had warned his people against mingling with people who worshipped other gods, so he avoided them when possible.
When a fierce storm came upon the sailing ship, these pagans called out to their own gods without success. They cast lots to determine who was at fault for the terrible storm. Jonah, who had told them that he was fleeing the LORD, was identified as the cause.
Eventually, at Jonah’s insistence, the sailors threw Jonah overboard. The storm calmed. Then something strange happened. The sailors ”feared the LORD ” and offered sacrifices to him. Even though Jonah was trying to escape from God, the Lord used Jonah to change the hearts of the pagan sailors.
How is God going to use you today? Even though you may not realize it at the time, God may use you on a mission for Him. God’s purposes may not be readily apparent to us, but He has a plan for our every step. Will you trust in His guidance?
