2020-04-24 - Live and Learn
For the last several weeks, I have been figuring out all kinds of audio, video, and computer stuff. My small church has gone from having a secondary afterthought type of online presence, to being completely online. We have set up member groups to hold virtual church conferences, hosted zoom meetings for staff and members, and streamed services online for the church and youth group. To do the latter, my son and I pulled many parts from multiple places to create a complete system resembling Frankenstein's monster, if it were steampunked. Many issues have been addressed (resolved or at least tolerably mitigated), thanks to rushed delivery of components from mail order places. However, sound has been problematic. It cuts in and out; we have static issues here and there. We have tried taking sound out of this port and that port, and hooking several adapters up in various combinations. At one time, I think we even had a daisy chain of four connectors, changing from one audio interface to another with some borrowed components in that mix. I have had some success, but it has not been great. I even began looking at new technology to put here and there. Then late last week, I found the owner's manual online. It was gathering dust in a buried corner of the vendor's site. The manual told me how to hook things up correctly. When I followed the manufacturer's directions, it amazingly just worked.
Just reading the directions made it better. Life is like that. We try all sorts of workarounds and adapters. We plug something almost right into this hole, and it sort-of works, but we know that it could be – that it should be – better. All we really need is to dust off the instructions and follow them. An old preacher once told me that BIBLE was an acronym for Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. Indeed, it is our instruction manual written by the Manufacturer.
God is the manufacturer. "So God created man in his own image; he created him in the image of God; he created them male and female." (Genesis 1:27 CSB)
God inspired every page of the manual. "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." (2 Timothy 3:16-17 KJV)
We would do well to use it. "Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night, so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do." (Joshua 1:8 NLT)
Live and learn. I encourage you to continue or to begin a habit of reading his instruction manual today.
