[PC-USA]  2020-02-04 - Pray for Our Country

As I was writing my next devotional, God started impressing something on my heart, so there was a change of plans.

Over the weekend, an American pop icon did a vile stripper's dance in "barely there" clothing on national television. Instead of standing up against the abuse of a female's body, and God's gift of sexuality, too many people praised her performance. Oddly missing was outrage from feminists and #metoo activists, even though this debases the portrayal of women.

This reminded me of a familiar verse in Isaiah "Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!" 5:20 (NASB)

Now, admittedly, Hollywood celebrities aren't alone in this, but they are prominently doing it, and some have openly mocked Christians and Biblical values. Hollywood celebrities have often held unbiblical values, but previously there were lines they didn't cross, especially when aware that youth would be watching. But in recent years, they have been crossing lines in movies, television shows, books and other media. If this only affected the celebrities, themselves, we could just shut our eyes and pray for them. But there are impressionable young people - as well as some who are old enough to know better - are influenced by them. And when people start seeing something on television, they often start believing it is normal and true. As African-American commentator Larry Elder has said, #WeHaveACountryToSave.

So what I am asking of you is to join me in praying EVERY DAY for the soul of this nation, especially praying for Hollywood, since they have inserted themselves into every area of people's lives, even though they are no wiser nor more educated than the rest of us, have no moral authority at all except what is too generously given to them, by fans and their opinion isn't one bit more valuable than anyone else's. We need more Kanyes!

God's word tells us that He listens to such prayers. As He told Israel, and as was recorded in 2 Chronicles 7:14, "if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land." May it be so.

Dear Father, please use us and all You have given us, for Your purposes, to spread Your gospel to fulfill Your plans. In Jesus' name amen.
