[CF Devotionals] 2020-01-22 - Every Moment

- - - - - -

Have you ever seen someone so happy to see a loved one that they were beside themselves? They were so overwhelmed with joy that they hopped up and down, whined, barked, raced around furniture and finally flew up on a chair and began chewing on their bone to calm themselves, in order to then greet them more calmly. Now, I am referring to our four-year-old German Short-haired Pointer / Lab mix Mellie upon the arrival of our daughter Kate. And this response would give the impression that it had been weeks into months since their last encounter when in fact it was just a couple of weeks ago. The unencumbered response to hearing her approach before being in view left me thinking about what a lesson can be found in such unbridled devotion. Melody gives absolutely no thought to how long Kate will be here, nor does she question how much she cares for her-rather she just embraces the moment to shower her with affection, fill her with uncensored fun with absolutely no chance of her attention being swayed in any other direction for each and every moment. Yes, she is a little sad when Kate’s getting ready to leave and often turns away, refusing to say goodbye. She will also stare longingly at the door for a little while, if she hears a noise. But one thing that is always the same-she never regrets a second of the time they shared and always looks forward to the next time, greeting her the same way each time.

While the world of the humans is quite complex in many ways, and God expects more of us as opposed to the canine world, there are certainly lessons to be learned about how we treat God’s creatures as well as his people. We can often learn the lessons from the creation he put in motion around, us right down to the canines in our lives. Humility, obedience, desire to serve, devotion and unwavering love are all right in front of us-all we must do is look around and watch what God is teaching us. I see them every day in many ways, and on this day was reminded yet again through a girl and her adopted therapy girl named Melody. It was a snapshot of what God wants with each of us and for us to share with one another. I loved every moment.

“The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.” (Proverbs 15:33 KJV)

“Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.” (1Peter 5:5 KJV)

“(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.” (2 Corinthians 10:4-5-6 KJV)

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.” (Colossians 3:23-25 KJV)

“if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. (Romans 12:8-10 NIV)
