[Calvary Chapel] 2019-11-09 - Balancing the Books

- - - - - - -

As church treasurer, I regularly balance financial statements. At the end of each month, I close out the financial book for that month and issue a report. Each month, I receive a statement from the bank listing deposits and expenditures. I reconcile that statement with the check book to make sure everything is accounted for properly. Once a year, I prepare a budget for the following year, on which the committee and church vote. I work to make sure that expected income balances with projected expenses. Everything must be accounted for and balanced out.

What about balancing the books on our personal lives? Do our good deeds balance out with our sins or transgressions? Have we run up a negative balance?

We know from the Bible that our salvation is not dependent on good works. Paul tells us in Romans 3:20 that no one will be declared righteous by our works. Our spiritual balance sheet doesn’t factor into our salvation. Instead, our salvation is a result in our faith in Jesus Christ. Paul says, “Righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.” (Romans 3:22, NIV)

Are your books balanced? Have you put your faith in Jesus and committed to following Him every day?
