2018-01-05 - Sleeping Sweetly
Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble; when you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. (Proverbs 3:23-24)
Before my daughter drifts off to sleep, I tell her to sleep sweet. I admit I heard the phrase in a Disney movie years ago, and it has stuck with me. I forego grammatical correctness, to wish my baby uninterrupted and peaceful sleep. Partly for her, the other half for me.
I never realized my nightly ritual was Biblical. In Proverbs 3, Solomon warns his son on the importance of sound judgment and discretion. One of the benefits of following these is sweet sleep.
I’ve seen what sleeping sweetly looks like, when my daughter has drifted to sleep. Her face is full of peace and contentment. There is no restlessness, only quiet slumber and the rhythmic beat of deep breathing.
How I, too, want to sleep sweetly. Before this can become a reality, I need to practice good judgment and discretion. May the Lord guide us along the best choices in this life.
Lord, Please don't let me be taken in by the wrong sort of crowd. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
