[Calvary Chapel] 2018-01-18 - Who Am I?

- - - - - - -

I love songs that tell a story or teach. When it is done in a song it is an easy medium to remember - at least for me and a few other people I know.

This is a classic hymn written many years ago of the same name, Who Am I?, that is beautiful and offers many of the same ideas as this more modern composition. There is wonder and humility and praise in the lyrics of both songs.

Wonder

The idea that the Creator of the Universe knows, and completely understand what we go through everyday and in every situation and that He cares for our joys, our pain and our disappointments should give us pause. Not so much that an omniscient God should know. He knows all things! But Jesus experienced our suffering. (Rom 8:18-28) He lived in our mortal flesh. The cited verse speaks of help for us and liberation of us and looking forward to the time when we are home.

He sees our sin and loves us anyway. Unspeakable love in light of the thought that we, as a race, turned our backs on Him i the garden.

Humility

"Who am i?" Adam was made from the dust of the Earth. It is said from dust we came and to dust we will go. Our frail mortal bodies will. We are finite creatures. We are made in the image of God, true. While we are His children and are loved enough for Jesus to humble Himself to come and pay for our sins to make a way for us to live forever with Him in Heaven, we were utterly dependent - incapable of helping ourselves to shake off the curse of sin.

Praise

Not because of who I am, but because of Who You are!

I know my place, and I know that God alone is responsible for the victory He shares with us. He hears us when we call. He catches us when we are falling. But only because of what God has done on our behalf we have been given the right to be called Children of God.

Songs have the power to mentally take us to far away places, back in time to a moment in our lives, to offer praise, or to remind us of truths and keep them in our memories. This song captures the story of amazing love.

Selah!

Lord God. Thank You for the gift of music. Thank You for the ideas that are stored and expressed in this, and many other songs that remind us of the love poured out on us to redeem us in the sacrifice that paid our price to open the door to live forever in Heaven with You. Amen.

Who Am I?

Casting Crowns

Who am I, that the lord of all the earth
Would care to know my name
Would care to feel my hurt?
Who am I, that the bright and morning star
Would choose to light the way
For my ever wandering heart?

Not because of who I am
But because of what you've done
Not because of what I've done
But because of who you are

I am a flower quickly fading
Here today and gone tomorrow
A wave tossed in the ocean
A vapor in the wind
Still you hear me when I'm calling
Lord, you catch me when I'm falling
And you've told me who I am
I am yours

Who am I, that the eyes that see my sin
Would look on me with love
And watch me rise again?
Who am I, that the voice that calmed the sea
Would call out through the rain
And calm the storm in me?

Not because of who I am
But because of what you've done
Not because of what I've done
But because of who you are

I am a flower quickly fading
Here today and gone tomorrow
A wave tossed in the ocean
A vapor in the wind
Still you hear me when I'm calling
Lord, you catch me when I'm falling
And you've told me who I am
I am yours

Not because of who I am
But because of what you've done
Not because of what I've done
But because of who you are

I am a flower quickly fading
Here today and gone tomorrow
A wave tossed in the ocean
A vapor in the wind
Still you hear me when I'm calling
Lord, you catch me when I'm falling
And you've told me who I am

I am yours
I am yours
I am yours

Whom shall I fear, whom shall I fear?
'Cause I am yours
I am yours
