2017-12-02 - Advent
Sunday marks the start of Advent ,which is defined as "The period beginning four Sundays before Christmas, observed in commemoration of the coming of Christ into the world." (Dictionary.com) We spend four weeks preparing our hearts for the arrival of Christ, and thinking about the events leading up to His birth. We read the familiar accounts of Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, and the innkeeper. Jesus' arrival would fulfill the words of the prophets. The Jewish nation was looking for the Messiah to free them from Roman rule.
What are you looking for this Christmas? Are you spending your time buying presents, decorating your home, and participating in community events? There is nothing wrong with doing all these things. But as Advent approaches, we also need to look at the reason for Advent. We need to slow down and consider the significance of the season. Jesus is about to appear in the flesh. He is coming. Have you prepared a place in your heart for Him? The shepherds did, as Luke tells us, "The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had hear and seen, which were just as they had been told." (Luke 2:20, NIV)
How will you spend Advent this year?
