Luke 1:5-17, 23-25

Both of them were upright in the sight of God, observing all the Lord's commandments and regulations blamelessly. Luke 1:6

Elizabeth did not learn she was pregnant by a test or in a physician’s office. An angel delivered the exciting news. Not only did her husband the priest Zechariah, learn of their son-to-be by astounding circumstances, he learned insights even today’s modern medical advances cannot disclose. The angel revealed the boy’s name would be John and have a great calling on his life. This John would be a pleasure and delight and many would rejoice over his birth. The child will be great in God’s sight, would be filled with the Holy Spirit from birth, and would help people return to fellowship with God.

Elizabeth and Zechariah obeyed God’s commandments and prayed for a child. Finally, in their old age the prayer was answered. Why did they have to wait so long to become parents? All we can do is speculate. Surely, it was more than strengthening their faith muscles. Perhaps God knew it would take special, mature, God-fearing parents to raise a prophetic son whose mission was to prepare the way for the Savior. Regardless of the reason, Elizabeth did not see her waiting period critically or as punishment. She gave God all the glory for her pregnancy.

Elizabeth and Zechariah’s neighbors were shocked when they said their son’s name would be John. The people all assumed it would be Zechariah and besides, John wasn’t a family name. Then again, John was not just any baby.

Lord, It is in the waiting process that I show my true impatience. Please forgive me when I temporarily don’t recall Your track record and promise of listening to my petitions and requests. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
