2017-09-14 - To the Least of These
Matt 25:37-40 Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? 38 And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? 39 When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40 The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’
Right now there are people all over the world who are struggling - to have their income cover their need, to deal with enormous storms and fires, earthquakes, political strife, loss of jobs, financial crisis, wars, and more. Many look around and say, "What can I do?" It all seems so overwhelming. What can one person do?
In verses 34-40 Jesus thanks the ones who did something even if it was a cup of cold water, or something to eat, or clothing. To many these are small things that help them get through to the next day. It is kindness gladly accepted. Jesus mentions charity to prisoners. Today it is a much more challenging thing. But all of these actions and many, many more can be calls placed on our hearts to do.
What are good works?
These are good works (Eph 2:10) stored up for us to do. Your calling might not be on this list. My wife knows someone who is in Houston with the Red Cross helping people who have lost everything. That is his calling. Yours may be much simpler or even more demanding. The simple act of encouraging someone can be the boost someone needs. Visiting or a phone call to someone who can't get out do the same. Donating to a relief organization can help someone you will never meet in this life. From the simple to the things that require special training and skills, these are good works people feel called to do. See verse 40 again. To the extent you have done this, you have done it to Me (Jesus). I hope that brings a humble smile to your heart.
Lord, open our eyes and hearts to the things around us that You have for us to do. Amen.
Grace & Peace,
