2017-08-26 - Giving to Jesus
Mark 12:43-44 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, the poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything--all she had to live on."
We are familiar with Jesus' account of the widow's offering. Jesus and his disciples watched as men and women put their offerings into the temple treasury. Rich people put in large amounts in front of their peers. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins worth much less. Jesus then commented that her tiny contribution was worth much more than the vast offerings of the others.
Many times, this lesson has been cited at the time of the year when pastors preach sermons encouraging tithing, the pledging of money for the next church year, and increased giving. The emphasis is on contributing financial resources. The actions of the poor widow are used as an example of financial giving.
Another way to look at Jesus' lesson would be to consider another type of contribution by the widow. What if the widow was giving her whole self to Jesus? By giving all her money, was she also giving her whole heart and soul? Was she "all in" for God? Jesus wants more than our money. He wants us to give ourselves completely to him. Have you given your whole self to Jesus?
