I gathered from her side that she was talking to a daughter. She gave her child some horrible advice. She said, Dont you know you shouldnt work hard? Nobody there will give you any credit. Just go with the flow. I was shocked by the advice as I would nominate myself for worst parent of the year if I gave my own child that advice.
It hurt me to hear her say it. Immediately my mind drifted toward fragments of a couple scriptures.
Colossians 3:17 (NASB) - Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.
What have you done today? What have you talked about? What actions have you taken? Do every one of those things in Jesus' name. That means as his ambassador, or representative on earth. And as you get to do it, be thankful about it.
So hows that look in real life? How are you living?
The other verse that I had come to mind was out of 1 Corinthians.
1 Corinthians 10:31 (NASB) - Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
I couldnt remember the reference on this so I Googled the verse and I got a hit on an article by John Piper that really got me thinking. What is sin? Can you define it for me?
Sin is disobeying God. It is anything we say think or do that displeases God. This verse is a command so not doing it would be a sin. Sin is not simply killing, cheating, stealing, or all the things were told not to do; it is also not just not going to church, not tithing, and not doing all the other things were told to do. Sin is not doing all things, any thing, for Gods glory. John Piper says it as, Sin is leaving God out of account in the ordinary affairs of your life. Sin is anything you do that you dont do for the glory of God.
Let that sink in for a moment Sin is leaving God out of anything.
So can an unbeliever do anything that isnt sinful? No because they do nothing for Gods glory.
So will you follow the old ladys advice and do as little as possible because you won't get glory anyway or will you give it your best so God will get the glory? Will you follow the lady at McDonald's or follow God?
What difference might that choice make in your attitude? How might that affect your day?
