In the movie City Slickers, Billy Crystal plays Mitch, a New Yorker, out on a dude ranch with a couple of buddies sorting out their lives. In one scene, he and Curly, a tough cowboy played by Jack Palance, are riding along. Curly asks, "Do you know what the secret to life is?"
Holding up his index finger, he says, "This. One thing. Just one thing. You stick to that and everything else don't mean [nothing]"
Mitch asks, "That's great, but what's the one thing?"
Curly replies, "That's what you gotta figure out."
What he said is true if we just focus our lives on one thing everything else fits into place around that one thing. It's true; we each have to figure out what that one thing is. Some people pour all their time and energy into their jobs. Some pour all their time and energy into recreational activities - fishing, golf, or whatever. Others invest all that they have into their spouse and their families. They all know there one thing and their lives have focus. But sadly, they have something missing because that's not the one thing that God intended for their lives to be wrapped around.
Colossians 1:14-19 [Jesus] in whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. 19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fullness dwell;
Did you catch that little phrase in verse 18? "In all things [Jesus] might have the preeminence." Jesus is to be our one thing. He lets us choose any one thing we want and we all do make a choice but it is his innermost desire that we would choose him.
Matthew 6:31-33 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Choose Jesus. As you begin a new day, just choose Jesus to be the one thing that today will revolve around. Put Jesus in the center of it all. Then tomorrow, choose Jesus again.
