2017-02-13 - Be of Good Cheer
While on Earth, Jesus was an encourager. He told ill and fearful people to cheer up. He was the solution.
He told a sick man who came to Jesus for healing: “Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you.” (Matthew 9:2 KJV) The man was healed.
There was a woman who had been ill a long time, and Jesus said to her: “Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that hour. (Matthew 9:22 NKJV)
When the disciples thought they saw a ghost walking on the sea, Jesus immediately told them to take courage. "It is I; do not be afraid.” (Matthew 14:27 NKJV)
Jesus encouraged His followers regarding future events. "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world, you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:32-33 NKJV)
Even when things look bleak and hopeless, Jesus tells us to not give up. We are to hope. We are to trust. Jesus cared how people felt, and wanted to encourage them not to focus on their hard situations. It's far too easy to dwell on what we see, or what we fear may happen. Even though Jesus no longer walks the Earth, we have His encouraging words from the Bible. So cheer up, today. God is in control.
