2017-01-01 - A New Leaf
Every New Year's Eve, many of us make well-meaning resolutions to "turn over
a new leaf," - whether it's in the area of relationships, weight loss, breaking
destructive habits or something else. With God, every day and even every
minute afford us the chance for a "clean slate," the opportunity to to start
over. We may have to deal with the consequences of our behavior, but it's
never too late - He will still bless us with an abundant life. No matter
what we have done or experienced, God is always eager to give us a new start.
Today we look at related passages.
Lamentations 3:22-23 (NASB) The LORD'S lovingkindnesses
indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.
1 John 1:9 (NASB) If we confess our sins, He is faithful
and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all
2 Cor. 5:16-17 (NASB) So from now on we regard no
one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this
way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation;
the old has gone, the new has come!
John 8:3-11 (NIV) The teachers of the law and the Pharisees
brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group
and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?"
They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing
him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger.
When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "If
any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her."
Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. At this, those who heard began
to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left,
with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her,
"Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" "No one, sir," she said.
"Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life
