and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. (Matthew 14:24 NIV)
God, You’re up on a mountain and I need You here! That is what I would have thought if I was in the boat with the disciples when they were battling a storm while Jesus was on a mountain praying. Not a very patient, faithful response I admit.
I know we are given enough grace to make it through the day (2 Corinthians 12:9) but I would like God to swoop in and instantly get rid of my messes but the Lord doesn’t always work that way. It should give us comfort to know the Lord always sees our struggles. He may not move on our behalf right away but we aren’t privy to what is going on behind the scenes.
Jesus saw the need to quiet the storm and yet He kept praying instead of helping the disciples. At first His actions may seem selfish but selfishness is not a characteristic of a loving God. He did not want them to go through hardships, but as we'll continue to read Matthew 14, we will see why the Lord waited to come to the disciples’ rescue. God used their ordeal to grow their faith and face their fears.
Lord, Many times I wish You would move quickly. But In these moments, may I not automatically turn to fear and doubt. You are available to us when we put our faith and trust in You. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
