This is perhaps some of the most abused and misquoted scripture there is. With it, some claim that God wants to give you whatever it is that you want. However, merely tacking "In Jesus' Name" on the end of a prayer is a lot like saying a wish to a shooting star. In his name means by his power and authority yes but God is not a fool; he knows not to give sinners albeit saved sinners a blank check like that. What Jesus said here is that if we ask for anything on his behalf he would do it.
Ambassadors to foreign countries go in the name of their country. They represent their country in the foreign land. When an ambassador does anything, he knows he represents his country. He is careful and as ambassadors of Christ, representing him in a foreign land, we too must be careful of what we say and do.
We must be in his character. Then if our requests are aligned with his thinking, the Father will grant them. How are we aligned with his thinking? Lucky for us, Jesus tells us in his next breath. "If ye love me, keep my commandments." (John 14:15)
If we obey him, we are acting as he would act and then we will know what is in his name and what isn't.
