[Calvary Chapel] 2016-09-15 - His Possession

- - - - - - -

Phil 3:12[b] (AMP) but I actively press on so that I may take hold of that [perfection] for which Christ Jesus took hold of me and made me His own.

Paul makes a point that is a little alien to our free society. He says, "Christ Jesus took hold of me" and at least one other translation says, "possessed me". There are degrees of possession I can think of such as parents being ultimately responsible for their young children. Until a child is old enough one could easily say the child is a possession of the parents. Paul says this to the Corinthians a little more clearly.

1 Cor 6:20 (AMP) You were bought with a price [you were actually purchased with the precious blood of Jesus and made His own]. So then, honor and glorify God with your body.

The illustration I have heard more than once is that we were purchased out of the slave market of sin. We were bound, unable to free ourselves, and were purchased by the blood of Christ Jesus to be His bond-servant. Either way, we are only free in Christ (v19).

We have been given more than we will probably understand in this lifetime. The oceans of mercy and grace that have been poured out us as individuals and humanity as a race is beyond counting. If we are honest we will recognize that there are moments when we lose sight of what we have been given - when we take our eyes off the prize of the race that has been given to us to run. Then we stop and ask God for help, and He is there arms open. If we are ready to ask He is willing to forgive and set us on the right path again.

We have been given much. Because of that much is expected of us. (Luke 12:48) And still we should be thankful every day for what has been given to us pressed down and shaken together.

Lord Jesus, help us start the day everyday with the thought of how much You love us, and how much You have already done for us. Amen.

Grace & Peace,
Mike
