During His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus encouraged His followers to be salt and light in the world. Salt is used for seasoning, and in Jesus' time, it was also used as a preservative. Without salt, our foods would taste bland, and without salt in ancient times, foods would spoil rapidly. How are we to be like salt as Christians? We are to season the lives of those around us, with good deeds and love. We are to help preserve their lives, by sharing the Gospel with them.

Similarly, we are to be light. Jesus said, "In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." (Matthew 5:16) Jesus wants us to shine our light for others to see. When we follow Him and obey His word, others will be drawn to the light. We will be beacons for others to see Jesus.

Jesus calls us to be salt and light for others. Salt is of little use, unless it is sprinkled out of the salt shaker. Light is of little use, unless it is situated in a place to illuminate something. God places us in situations where we can shake our salt and shine our light for the lost and hurting. Will be you salt and light for someone else today?
