Letters to a Young Church ~ Verse 10
1 Thessalonians 1:10
Verse 10: Not only had they turned to God from idols, but they lived in expectation of the coming of Christ. Christ who had been resurrected from the dead, and who was coming to save the church, these believers, from the coming wrath or judgment of God. For these believers, there is absolutely no question that the return of Christ was a reality. It was just as real as their own salvation, and they were looking forward to it. This is the hope of the church. This, too, is our hope as we read later in the letter.
“For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words” (1 Thess. 4:15-18).
Who are the models? Well we have seen that Paul, Silvanius and Timothy are models. We have also seen that Christ is the ultimate model. But we must understand that the Thessalonians themselves were models, and therefore so are we. The Christian life is one of a pattern - of 1st taking in - and then giving out. Unfortunately, too many claiming the name of Christ only want to take in.
To be continued.
