2016-06-08 - Where Creativity Happens
I noticed today’s title on a business receipt from a purchase. It doesn’t matter what place, but for the purposes of clarity, I will say it’s a local craft store that is a nationwide chain. They want people to remember that they can be the source of all their needs that relate to creative actions. As an artist, though, I take exception to a particular place or idea being the source of creativity. Again, I know it’s a slogan and a marketing tool for them, as I learned in college so many years ago. In fact, I learned of it to the point of it becoming increasingly clear to me that advertising and design, as related to the selling of products and ideas, was of no interest to me as an outlet for my own creative gifts. Nothing wrong with the field, it’s just not for me - and I figured the advertising approach would ruin art for me.
I wish it were as simple, sometimes, and being somewhere or sitting down to put things together that allowed creativity to spawn into a masterpiece or at least a good beginning point for one. But it doesn’t really work that way. I can have a pile of supplies I need, and a thought of my end goal, and still sometimes nothing happens. For me it’s a process (and a state or quality of being creative from dictionary.com) that includes having the right tools or equipment and supplies, combined with ability and the reason for doing a piece as well as what it means from the recipient’s point of view - with lastly the proper time to process it all. It can come together rather quickly, or take a bit of time. If creativity were able to be purchased or found in a place, then pretty much everyone who wanted it would have it. What’s your gift, or something you are good at that also makes you feel most alive when able to do it? Ask the Father to show you where you can use what you love, to serve Him and rest in Him. He never wants you to dislike what used to bring you joy.
