Simon Peter was one of Jesus' inner circle. Peter was present at all the major events in the ministry of Jesus. He was a trusted, close follower of Jesus. So it came as a surprise to Peter, when Jesus told him that Peter would deny Jesus three times. (Mark 14:27-31) Peter never imagined turning his back on Jesus.
Yet after Jesus' arrest, Peter did publicly deny Jesus three times. Peter was devastated and "broke down and wept." (Mark 14:31) After Jesus' Resurrection, Jesus sought out Peter. He wanted Peter to know that he was forgiven. In fact, Jesus gave Peter a charge to shepherd the faithful followers of Christ. Peter went on to be a leader and spokesman for the church. He served Jesus well. Peter publicly denied Jesus three times - yet Jesus forgave him.
Today, we sin in many ways. By our witness, we sometimes live as if we are not Christians. But Jesus still forgives us and welcomes us back. No matter what we have done, we can still repent, ask for forgiveness and be restored. Just like He did with Peter, Jesus can still use us to serve Him and His ministry.
