2015-04-18 - Our Baptism
Luke 3:16 John answered, "I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire."
John the Baptist was popular. The crowds flocked to hear his message of repentance, and then to be baptized. Even the hated tax collectors were baptized. Matthew tells us that the Pharisees and Sadducees travelled to hear John the Baptist. Mark says that "all the people of Jerusalem" went out to the river with John. Yet John told them that someone much more powerful was to come after him--Jesus.
As John said, Jesus baptizes us with the Holy Spirit and with fire. The Holy Spirit descended onto the early believers at Pentecost, and we receive Him today, when we put our faith in Christ. The second part, fire, is sometimes considered to be testing or trials. We are baptized, and grow in our faith in Christ, when we encounter difficulties in our Christian walk. When we face adversities and troubles, we grow closer to Christ. These may not be pleasant experiences, but God uses them, to draw us closer to Him.
Jesus wants to have a close, personal relationship with us. He wants to walk with us daily. Have you decided to follow Him?
