2015-01-28 - Go to the Light
Just before Christmas, a new Krispy Crème© was built in a prime spot near a larger group of other fast food stores, as well as nearby the grocery store and lumber yard. Generally it’s a great location, but it has created some traffic issues and more potential for an accident, en route to a nearby mall. At night, the first thing you see is the dramatic lighting they put around the building. It’s so bold, coming up from the ground on all sides, that it becomes the center of attention. I am sure that seeing the building so easily, potentially causing you to make an impulse stop, is part of the marketing plan. And with some homes and apartments nearby many can just walk over and get a dozen donuts. I don’t really have an affinity for donuts, but on the day of the grand opening, it became a media event, which included one of the local television stations. Despite what marketing strategies and news coverage might suggest, we really don’t need more distractions from the real light we should be focusing on, to get through the day we are given.
The light I need isn’t highlighting a store, theatre, restaurant, car or anything else. In the right light, there’s nothing wrong with any of those things. Once we have learned the truth of salvation in God’s word, we are to be a light in a darkened world. That is the light in which all other ideas and actions should move. How we walk out our days, from that point on, should be based on the truth - and others should see it in our lives, just as a light brings clarity on where things are in a darkened room. It may not be easy, but it’s impossible to unlearn what you already know, so it really isn’t optional anymore. And it sure is worth it, in the end. Are you a light? It’s what I always long to be, to glorify the one that made me.
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)
