2014-12-29 - What Would Solomon say?
God created all of us. "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book, before one of them came to be." (Psalm 139:13-16)
I speak no disrespect, but what was God thinking, when He put us together as a family? I know what my father was thinking, and it wasn't about starting a family, but that is what happened. On the outside, we may have looked like the picturesque royal family - King David, wife Bathsheba, and son and heir Solomon, but there was private sadness at times.
I often wonder if my mom was or felt like an innocent victim. Before my mom met my dad, she had a different family. Then she had to marry my father, and lost her first husband, married Dad, and then their baby son died. Not long after, I came into the picture.
Children take pride in their parents. (Proverbs 17:6 The Message) Children were created to be pleased with their parents, When I was growing up, I thought the opposite. As an adult full of Godly wisdom, it now seems right that we are to cherish, value, and enjoy our parents. This may sound like an astounding claim to some of you, and at times, I admit I did not always enjoy my parents or their discipline.
Warm feelings of glee won't appear just when our parents give us a present, show us attention, or give us words of encouragement. It isn't conditional. When parental admiration does not come easily in certain situations, I pray the Lord will help us look beyond the surface, to see our parents with fresh eyes. Dear Lord, let our perception of them be accurate, kind, and just.
Lord, May I be caring, appreciative, and trustworthy, when it doesn't come naturally. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
