[CF Devotionals] 2014-10-26 - The Second Commandment

All About Our Relationship with God

- - - - - - -

The other thing we must realize that as there are different people, so the danger areas are different for each of us. In some ways to be warned against having literal idols - as the Israelites' idols were - is easier, for there in no need to have them at all, but for us, many times those things that can become our idols are not bad, in and of themselves

"For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs" (1 Timothy 6:10 ESV).

In some cases, they are even positive. The desire to serve in the church is appropriate, but if the desire is for man's approval, then it is wrong. As you can see then, for us as believers, it can be very easy for other things to take the preeminent place in our lives, instead of that place belonging to the Lord.

Again, though, I want the focus to be on God. The more we delve into the word, the more we are in communion with the Father, through prayer, by praise, with the spirit of worship;.The more we look for the leading of the Holy Spirit, the less likely that anything can become an idol - for the more we are one mind with the Father.

As you can see, then, with the first two commandments, we are talking of our relationship with God. These are commandments, and it is vital, we understand, that though we should follow them because this is the desire of our hearts, nevertheless, if we don't, then there will be natural consequences to our lives, that will bring down discipline and potentially failure. We must pray that the Holy Spirit will lead and direct us to a fuller life in God and Christ.

What do you think are some specific things we can do in our lives to put these commands into practical use? I think we can all see that to live with God in the proper place in our lives, can make some dramatic changes in our lives. Let us pray that our lives will demonstrate this.

"You shall not make for yourself a carved image … You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God …" instead … "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." for "Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, he must follow me and where I am, there will my servant be also. …" (Exodus 20:4-5; Matt 22:37; John 12:25-26 ESV)

To be continued.
