In Luke 10:38-42, we find the story of Mary and Martha. Their friend Jesus is visiting their home. Martha busies herself with preparations and work. Mary, on the other hand, spends her time at Jesus' feet, "listening to what he said." (v.39, NIV) When Martha complains to Jesus about Mary's lack of help, Jesus questions Martha's priorities. He tells Martha that she is worried about the wrong things. Jesus says, "Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." (verse 42)
The chance to sit and learn at the feet of Jesus is priceless. Mary realizes that she is taking advantage of the opportunity to gain knowledge from the Master. Martha, however, is too concerned about the details of the visit. Martha is missing out on the opportunity to hear the secrets of the Kingdom. In today's hectic world, do we get too concerned about the details of life - and miss out on the really important matters? Do we take time to worship the Lord? Do we read God's Word regularly? Do we speak to Him in prayer?
