2014-07-02 - Light Brite©
There are more ways than one, to be a light in the world. When I was around three or four years old, I remember spending some time with my cousins. The oldest of the four boys had gotten a Lite Brite© game - for his birthday, if I am not mistaken. I recall us visiting in the summer, and him showing it to us. It was the first person we knew who had one of these brand-new games (The game came out in 1967, but for us I believe it was during the '70's, when we first saw it in person.). It was likely the equivalent of interest to us then, as a video game might be to kids now. Basically, it was a pegboard that had different templates that turned out as electronic drawings, when colored pegs and electricity were added. All you could see were the pegs showing the design, because the template boards were black. I found this game fascinating due to the bright colors, and due to it having so many options on designs.
Some kids are territorial about their games, especially when the games are new, but I remember Scotty as just the opposite. There was a light in his eyes, too. I remember him and my brother enjoying sharing time together, when we would visit, as they were only a month apart in age. Perhaps they were kindred spirits, of sorts. His Mom and ours talked about a trip to a beach when they were both pregnant. Mom told us they buried their bellies in the sand, so they could lie on their tummies and enjoy the soothing sounds of the ocean. Maybe the time our Moms spent together before they were born, was part of their getting acquainted. At any rate, those two had lots of fun together. I enjoyed sharing time with them, and enjoyed the new game, but more than anything else, I saw such joy between friends, with the addition of a simple interactive game. It was a light in my world, if you will. And the expressions on Scotty and my brother Ed's faces, while they played together, is something I have always remembered. Scotty passed away from Leukemia, not long after those memories of fun. While that was very sad for us all, years later, I still more clearly remember the Lite Brite©. A giving and caring soul cannot be hidden for long, even in the darkest moments.
How will you be remembered?
