2014-01-18 - Encourage Each Other
Hebrews 3:13 "But encourage one another daily..." (NIV)
After Jesus ascension into Heaven, the Disciples were told to wait in Jerusalem until Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to them. The Holy Spirit would encourage and empower the Disciples. As a result, the church experienced a rapid period of growth, which was accompanied by increased persecution. The early believers depended on each other for fellowship and survival. In the midst of severe opposition from the government and from the Jewish religion, the budding Christian church scattered throughout the Mediterranean region. The Christians missionaries frequently traveled in pairs, going from city to city. They stayed in the homes of fellow believers. The encouragement and support of fellow Christians was vital to their success.
Each year, over 100 million Christians around the world are persecuted in some way. Governments and other religions present fierce opposition. Like for the early Christian church, the encouragement and support of fellow believers is crucial to our mission to spread the Gospel. Let us "encourage one another daily."
When we face opposition and persecution today, we need to remember that the Good Shepherd will carry us to safety, as well.
