2013-11-14 - When Storms Come
The USS George Washington aircraft carrier battle group has arrived in the Philippines to assist with relief efforts after Typhoon Haiyan. This is when a weapon of war becomes an olive branch. A massive sword has literally become a plowshare. There are multiple surgical facilities, desalination plants, and aircraft available as resources. This provides skilled medical care, fresh water, search and rescue along with food and other supplies.
There are missionaries and local churches on the ground already and more aid is pouring in to portions of this devastated area. Some of that help sadly will not arrive in time. Some of the people who survived the storm have lost everything, including their families. Some who might help will feel powerless against such incredible destruction and death. Looting and gangs have hampered efforts to reach some people in great need.
The naysayers will ask - Where was God in all of this? If He exists and is all-powerful He could have stopped this from happening.
In Romans 11:33 we are told that God's ways are unfathomable. There are many things that happen in this lifetime that seem unfair. The Bible never promised that life was fair. Could God have stopped this storm hitting land or from happening at all? He could. He calmed the storm on the Sea of Galilee. Why didn't He stop Hiayan? If God's ways are unknowable then we may not get that answer. The other side of the coin is - What do we do when this happens?
Matt 10:42 (AMP) And whoever gives to one of these little ones [in rank or influence] even a cup of cold water because he is My disciple, surely I declare to you, he shall not lose his reward.
Some nations send supplies and aircraft carriers.
Christians - some people can go being the hands and feet of God to the people they reach. Some give of their time to process aid so that it gets packaged and delivered. Some send money or food. Pray. All of us can pray. God hears the prayers of His faithful children. God brings miracles out of disasters. Send the love of Christ in the form of blankets, clothing and food. Right now a cup of cold, clean water and some food to some who live there would be a miracle.
That can change a life - forever. Give hope, life and agape.
Lord Jesus - Give those who go courage and comfort for the survivors. Use us to pour Your love on devastated people so that they know You care. Let everyone see You through the hands, feet and gifts of your church. Amen.
