In Luke 18:18-24, we find the story of a devout ruler who came to Jesus with an important question. The young leader asked Jesus, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" (Luke 18:18 NAS) Jesus explained to him that he should honor God and obey God's commandments. The man then told Jesus that he had honored and obeyed God since his youth. Jesus then told him, "One thing you still lack; sell all that you possess and distribute it to the poor, and you shall have treasure in Heaven; and come, follow me." (Luke 18:22)
Jesus was inviting this young man to become one of his disciples. Jesus was showing him the way to eternal life. What would this young man do? Luke 18:23 tells us that the ruler became very sad, because he was very rich, and would not give up his possessions. Jesus saw that the one thing hindering the young man was his attachment to material things. What are you holding onto? What is keeping you from following Jesus?
