[CF Devotionals] 2013-10-10 - Our Impact

2 Chron 7:13-14 “I may stop the sky from sending rain. I may command the locusts to destroy the land. I may send sicknesses to my people. 14 Then if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves, if they will pray and seek me and stop their evil ways, I will hear them from heaven. I will forgive their sin, and I will heal their land. (NCV)

God sent drought, locusts and sickness to Israel to get their attention - at times armies from surrounding nations would be sent. His intent was to get His people back on their knees in prayer and obeying His instructions for living. Christ gave us two commands - to love God with all our hearts, minds and souls, and second to love others as ourselves. The Ten Commandments are distilled down into these two thoughts where the first table of the law refers to our relationship with God and the second table refers to our relationship to others.

America has thrown God out of schools, government and even most holidays - Christmas and Easter included. We as a people may sing "God Bless America" during the 7th inning stretch of a baseball game but we have given Him very little reason to bless us. If God can send drought He can send flood, or storms, or swarms of those who want to remove every facet of God from the public square.

On the other hand churches and church-based organizations are often first or early on the scene when there is an emergency. There are groups fighting to allow us to continue to exercise freedom of religion. So all is not lost though we have a lot of work to do.

We need to humbly ask for His forgiveness and help in living the way we are supposed to live following His example. I would rather hear God, please bless us again sung from the actions and hearts of Christians thankful for everything that has been done for us and blessings poured out on us - and for his correction when we need it. Until this happens the church will hardly be a city on a hill, but closer to  a light under a bushel. God has promised to restore His blessings if we who are called by His name will ask for His forgiveness and live for Him. Selah.

Lord Jesus - Open my eyes and heart to Your warnings and the path you have for me to walk. Make Your children a blessing to those around us lifting up Your name in the process. Show me ways to more deeply integrate love for You and love for others into my life. Amen.

Grace & Peace,
Mike
